MILLIONS OF ATHLETES
DON’T REACH THE TOP BECAUSE
THEY’RE SHORT OF MONEY
FUNDING NEEDS TO BE EASIER
Millions of athletes worldwide dream of the top. Great talent that could reach this top. Emphasis on -could-, because money is key in their road to the succes. With enough funding, athletes get access to the best training camps, they can fly-in the best trainers, travel to international tournaments, pay specialized coaches and buy high-quality equipment. But raising funds for top sports isn’t easy. A shortage of funding limits an athlete's performance.
MOTIVATION COMES FROM PASSION FOR SPORTS
The road to the top of a sport is a fulltime job. The catch? No fulltime salary and enormous, risky investments. Let’s be honest: how sure are you that an athlete can really hit the top? The summit is the mountain’s smallest part. Still, millions of athletes dig deep to reach their full potential and ascend to greatness. That requires courage. Perseverance. Ambition. Passion. It’s why athletes are so inspiring – to peak they have to conquer uncertainty. In spite of all sacrifice. In spite of the hustle for money. Their dream conquers all.
MORE MONEY, MORE SUCCESS
Athletes perform better when they have the funds needed to train in the right set of conditions, to travel to international tournaments and to concentrate fully on their sport. Research shows that 50 percent of medal-classifications in a country are determined by population growth and the gross value of domestic products. In short: the more money in, more medals out.
LIMITED FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Athletes grind to the bone to raise funds for their dream sport. The Netherlands invests heavily in top sports, because we want to be a part of the top 10 best-performing countries. Good news for the best athletes in promising sports – the ones that mean gold, or a new cup for the Netherlands. Even then it’s not enough. Athletes of less-promising sports are often left to their own devices.
CURRENT FUNDING OPTIONS
NOC*NSF, FEDERATIONS AND CLUBS
Federations, unions and clubs support the best talent with extensive programs. Think of training schools, sponsored material or cost reimbursements. NOC*NSF offers financial provision to top-tier athletes with status (those active in promising sports), the so-called scholarship. Not all costs are covered, but it provides athletes with a chance to train.
The parents of talented young athletes have to juggle time and income. It costs time to bring them to training camps and international tournaments. Time that would have been spent at work, resulting in less income. Sports have such financial impact that parents on an average income need to make drastic decisions to afford their child’s dream. Let alone the expensive sports such as tennis, racing or horse riding. Even an above-average income isn’t enough to reach the top in those sports.
In specific cases, crowdfunding can be a real solution for athletes. Campaigns are often based on short-term goals or projects. However the athletes we spoke to are done with the hustle for money.
Sport careers require an average investment of 23.5 hours a week, making a full-time job impossible. Part-time jobs are difficult too; tournament dates vary and work schedules don’t.
Companies love working with athletes that have high visibility. Think of those athletes that already play the big tournaments , and have a large following on social media.
Are you a Dutch athlete and do you want to become a micro-influencer? Then you’ll need at least 5.000 followers. Fresh talent won’t have these numbers, nor the focus to get them. This option is only feasible for the more advanced talent who has already invested in their visibility.
A WORLDWIDE PROBLEM
It’s impossible to obtain cold, hard facts on the funding problem. But it’s already problematic to obtain funding for talented athletes in the Netherlands, a country that’s made top sports a national ambition. Then what about the smaller, lesser known sports? For the less promising sports in our country? What about countries that aren’t as prosperous? Millions of athletes need more funding to really become the best.
Funding is an increasingly-determining factor in sports at the highest level.
Good material and the opportunity to race can make or break his career. So in other words, funding is crucial.
There are no sponsor options in my sport, it is still too small. It’s difficult to get the right gear and training with no funding.
Thanks to the Peakz sponsorship I will able to travel more for my competition and to reach the top of the world ranking.
